Modern

The terms Modern Dance, Lyrical dance, and Contemporary Dance all have similar techniques. The basic common thread is that this is to tell a story. Modern dance (our preferred term) comes from dancers in the 1920’s who wanted to break away from the restraints of classical ballet and add the enjoyment of sheer movement back into their dancing. Modern uses many techniques of ballet but is not afraid to wonder from the norm (i.e.: a pointed foot vs a flexed foot). Repertory work (building on classic stories and common human emotions) is stressed. There is a barre and center warm up as well as creative dance. The technique of the masters: Graham, Humphry, Tharp, and Ailey are explored as well as new and innovative dancers.
